Tutorial two: Digital Camera use and applications

"A new technology is rarely superior to an old one in every feature". Today we had a little discussion around this and considered the pros and cons of digital cameras. There was really no-one that agreed to that statement in regards to digital cameras. I remember taking photos of my children when they were little, and as it is got carried away on a number on occasion (because they were soooo cute) and took far to many pictures of the same or similar thing and consequentely had to pay for the prints. The matter how often I asked the nice person at the photo shop to only print out the nice stuff, I always ended up with "the less desirable". Digital cameras are simply great insofar that anything that doesn't look right can be deleted on the spot. The downside of this is that, if the photographed subjects don't agree with you on the "cute" factor and get hold of your camera before you had a chance to download them on your computer, precious holyday memories or that "hard case" picture from that cool party are gone!

List some of the ways that digital images can be stored, transferred and manipulated using other communications technology.

Given the prevalence of image capturing devices, and thinking about the issues discussed in tutorial one, consider what sort of ethical issues may arise with their use.

Briefly discuss some of the ways that digital images could, or are, being used in occupational therapy practice
On my Fieldwork 2 placement, they had to write down each morning what each client was wearing as part of a safety procedure. This took up valuable time each morning till someone had the great idea of taking a picture of each client as they arrived each morning. They also held a photo competition where every day a group of clients would go out with digital cameras and take pictures of whatever they liked. The (often astonishing) results where then printed out, laminated and displayed along the walls throughout the building.

Explain what the difference is between digital and optical zoom
The optical zoom works like a zoom lens on a film camera. It changes the length and magnifies the picture taken by bringing it in closer. Image quality stays high throughout the zoom range. Digital zoom simply crops the image to a smaller size, then enlarges the cropped portion to fill the frame again. This results in a significant loss of quality of the picture.

Explain what is meant by the term megapixel
An image is made out of a lot of dots put together. Pixel count refers to the number of dots in an image. A Mega pixel, MP for short, consists of 1 million dots per image.

This is a test post from flickr, a fancy photo sharing thing.
